The Crisis Facing Syrian-Armenians: The Urgency of Providing Assistance

Opinion by Garo Bedrossian Our beloved Syrian-Armenians are facing a serious crisis. The widespread civil war, the slaying of hundreds, often on a daily basis the destruction and collapse of buildings, fires, gunfire, abductions, sabotage events everywhere, widespread unemployment as an obvious consequence, involuntary "imprisonment" of families in their own homes several days at a time, lack of bread and water, the skyrocketing food prices, price gouging, anxiety and fear, etc. Because of the conflict, within the Armenian-populated districts of Aleppo, Kamishli, Der Zor, Damascus, Homs, Latakia, Kessab, etc., our brothers and sisters are being subjected to relative losses and evilness. For weeks, Syria's largest city, Aleppo, has been under fire with modern destructive weapons, frightful street fighting, destruction and fires.…

SARF Formation

The crisis in Syria and as a consequence, the perilous daily lives of the Syrian Armenians have alarmed and deeply concerned the Armenian community. The historical record reminds us the past and present destiny of nations; making assumptions on past history may lead us to uncertainty and anxiety; and that is why we should move with practical considerations, determination and a spirit of service. The spiritual heads, and the leaders of the political and humanitarian organizations in the Western U.S.A., as an alert guardians of the community, came together to collectively bring together the "Syrian Armenian Relief Fund Executive Committee" with the task of planning activities and coordinating fundraising, and distributing funds as needed to save lives, and to provide…

The Ordeal of the Syrian-Armenians

Opinion by Zaven Khanjian We Don't Have the Luxury to Waste Time Hey-ho! Awake if still asleep, And if a wake saddle your mounts, Take up your arms; get on your mounts, Don't say David came like a thief, Sneaked in on you before you woke, And stole away in the dark night. - Levon Surmelian (David's call in) Daredevils of Sassoun We are no fatalist, nor pessimist by nature, and yet so convoluted were the knots, so dark the layers, so profound the conflict and so widespread the polarizations, that no learned person or expert can foretell the outcome of the catastrophe that once again befell us, Armenians, this time striking Syria and the Syrian-Armenians. Syria, the most peaceful of…

Let’s Help the Syrian Armenians

Opinion by Khachig Janoyan "A terrible thing is taking place there, under the mask of darkness." VT The famous author William Saroyan believed in the Armenian spirit as he wrote, "Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia." Saroyan understood the power of prayer for Armenians, "Der Voghormia" (God beseech us). Having felt the horrors and misery of war on their own skins, Armenians, more than any other people in the world, appreciate peace. As a people, we have experienced Genocide, we have lost lives…

On Thursday, the group issued a call to support the efforts, the text of which is presented below: During the past weeks, the 17-month conflict in Syria has escalated to dangerous proportions. Caught in the crossfire of this growing conflict are the innocent citizens of Syria, among them the large Armenian community. The presence of Armenians in Syria dates back many centuries, and throughout that time, the community has had an important role in the Armenian Diaspora reality. Especially after the Armenian Genocide, the growing Armenian community, through its hard work and…
